Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year: 6 - KTM Super Duke 990

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year: 6 - KTM Super Duke 990
6 - KTM Super Duke 990 year 2005

Engine

To call the KTM Super Duke's 999cc, DOHC V-twin a mere ‘motor’ is a bit like saying atomic warfare is bad for the flowers. Twisting the throttle unleashes such incredible accelerative forces on the KTM 990 Super Duke it’s possible to give yourself wrinkles over your body. The fuel economy is laughable, often 80 miles to reserve, but frankly you’ll be enjoying yourself too much to care.

Handling

Staggeringly responsive. You just need to glance at a corner on the KTM 990 Super Duke and BANG! you’re there. The WP suspension is spot-on, with plenty of feedback through the wide bars. The four-piston Brembo brakes are superb and never seem to lose their ferocious bite. Even the little nose fairing on the Super Duke works well over distances. Forget pillions, though, and bigger riders might struggle to fit the KTM Super Duke.

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year: 5 -Triumph Speed Triple 1050
5 - Triumph Speed Triple 1050 year 2005

Engine

Loads of stomp, real kick-sand-in-yer-face power from the 1050cc three cylinder motor, pretty much lifted straight from the Sprint ST and retuned slightly to make even more gobby amounts of torque. The Triumph Speed Triple 1050 makes serious oomph between 3000-8000rpm and you can just rocket past cars on congested A roads anytime you feel like it. Lovely even power delivery from the fuel injection too.

Handling

The Triumph Speed Triple 1050 is a motorcycle you need to test ride before you buy it. Not everyone likes the slightly lairy handling, which has a suspension set up on the firm side - you could do trackdays on the Triumph Speed Triple 1050 and acquit yourself respectably, but road riding is harder work because of that firmness and precision. It isn't that comfortable on long rides, but if hard charging cornering and braking are your thing, then the Triumph Speed Triple 1050 delivers a sporty ride that can cope.

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year: 4 - Suzuki RGV250

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year: 4 - Suzuki RGV250
4 - Suzuki RGV250  year 1997-89

Engine

From the RGV250K to the RGV250R (the officially-imported UK models) the liquid-cooled, two-stroke, 249cc 90°V-twin remained fundamentally the same. Although they made around 55bhp@10,500rpm, give or take, the motors didn’t have to push much weight along so the Suzuki was still blindingly quick. Like any fast two-stroke, despite the power valves, there’s not much going on at low revs, so you’ve got to keep it revving to get anywhere fast.

Ride and Handling

Compared to the best sportsbikes of today, with their fat tyres, stiff frames and racing suspension, the old RGV250 can seem a bit ‘woolly’ by comparison. But, with a good set of tyres and well sorted suspension the Suzuki will keep up with the best of them on tight B roads. The beefy aluminium frame and swingarm is more than a match for the power on tap, so the trick with the RGV is simply never to let off for the corners! Later models handle better than the early ‘K’ and ‘L’ bikes, but are 11kg heavier (up from 128kg to 139kg) thanks mainly to the heavier ‘banana’ and braced swingarms.

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year: 3 - Triumph Daytona 675

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year: 3 - Triumph Daytona 675

Triumph Daytona 675 year 2006

Engine

The Triumph Daytona 675's three cylinder engine is a masterpiece of compact simplicity and features a stacked gearbox, close ratio gearbox and high compression ratio of 12.6:1 – all of which adds up to giving the Triumph Daytona 675 a claimed 123bhp of throaty fun. The most impressive thing about the motorcycle is its broad spread of power and excellent fuelling system – a previous failing on some Hinckley sportbikes.

Handling

The Triumph Daytona 675's narrow chassis, featuring frame spars set atop of the motor, rather than along the sides of the cylinders, gives you the impression you could be riding a grey import 400cc class motorcycle. USD forks and a firm monoshock keep you focused on the delightful business of going fast aboard the 675, which is very easy to do. In a word, it is accomplished.

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year:2 - Triumph Street Triple

Top 100 Motorcycles last10 year:2 - Triumph Street Triple
2 - Triumph Street Triple  year 2005

Engine

It’s impossible to think of a better engine to power the Triumph Street Triple. The 675cc triple, lifted from the firm’s Daytona 675 offers absolutely everything you need whether you’re a new rider, do lots of town riding or you want to have fun out on the open road. The Street Triple motor is packed full of grunt, sounds great at full throttle and has enough power on tap to keep all but the most hardcore of riders entertained.

Handling

Although the Triumph Street Triple doesn’t have fully adjustable suspension, out of the crate it’s set-up perfectly to suit UK roads and UK-riders, which is more than you can say for its soft n’soggy Japanese rivals when they leave their factories. The lightweight Triumph floats over bumps but doesn’t tie itself in knots when you turn the wick up. The Street Triple’s spacious, upright riding position affords the rider lots of control while being very comfy at the same time.

The Ducati 999 Testastretta engine was completely redesigned from top to bottom and using all the knowledge Ducati have gained from racing motorcycles in World Superbikes and MotoGP. Harley Davidson VR1000 Test drive

Harley Davidson VR1000 Test drive
Made in America was the theme for the Harley Davidson

Approaching the front straight out of Thunderhill raceway's super-slick turn nine, the rev counter needle pulled from nowhere up into the power zone. As the pointer flicked through 6,000, then 7,000, then 8, the bellow grew to a roar, the scenery rushed forward in warp drive, and then with a quick flick of its pointy tail, the tach hit 10-and-a-half grand and the power was gone.

Beginning and nowadays of Yamaha motorcycle

Beginning and nowadays of Yamaha motorcycle

It all started with a music factory called Nippon Gakki which later grew into the Yamaha company. It was founded in 1955 by Torakusu Yamaha who was actually a clock maker. The factory was filled with machines used to make propellers during the second World War, but now the first motorcycle was built called the Red Dragonfly YA-1 (still an airplane name ;o)

Yamaha had a good name for light, two stroke bikes, especially the 1960 YD models from 250cc YDS and later the 350cc YR1. A whole series of models was developed with the super popular YR5 from 1970 being light, fast, reliable and nicely priced. Another famous model was the YPVS from 1983 which had an exhaust valve which improved the output by 50 percent.
